Hippolyte’s call for exhibition in Autumn 2027 is open to all artists and various forms of contemporary art. However, photography plays an important role in Hippolyte’s exhibition program, so proposals are expected to have a connection to photographic art or the extended field of photography more than just superficially.
Hippolyte’s call for exhibitions in a nutshell
- The call for submissions is open twice a year, in April and October. Exhibition slots are applied for approximately 1.5 years in advance, and the current application round is for fall 2026.
- We receive an average of about 200 applications annually.
- Exhibitions are selected through an open call process with peer review.
- Call for exhibitions is open until Thursdsay 30 of April 23:59.
- Applications are submitted through an electronic form. We do not accept applications sent via email or by mail. Late applications will not be considered.
Who can apply
- All professional practitioners, artists, artist groups, and curators can apply with a ready-made exhibition concept.
- Photography plays an important role in the exhibition program, so proposals are expected to have a connection to photographic art or the extended field of photography more than just superficially.
- An applicant may be granted a new exhibition slot at Hippolyte Photogallery when 5 years have passed between the previous exhibition and the applied-for exhibition time.
- We encourage to submit applications for exhibitions, whether you are at the beginning of your career or have been an experienced artist for a longer period. We welcome a diverse range of applicants.
Exhibition spaces and rents
Hippolyte has two exhibition spaces, the larger one being the Photographic Gallery Hippolyte (aprox. 72 m²)and the smaller one Hippolyte Studio (aprox. 13 m²). There is an open connection from the large exhibition space to the office of the association’s staff located on the mezzanine. This should be considered when planning the soundscape of the artworks. Any sounds from the artworks displayed in the Studio should be directed to headphones.
From 2025, the exhibition space is rent-free for all artists. However, the rental status of the exhibition space is determined annually based on funding decisions. If the association’s funding and other revenue sources remain unchanged, the space will continue to be rent-free.
The maximum rental fees in our website (Exhibitions > Apply for an exhibition) apply to the exhibition times currently available. The Association of Photographic Artists reserves the right to make possible VAT changes regarding exhibition rents.
How to Apply
Exhibition times for Autumn 2026 are from August to December. The length of the exhibition period is generally 4-5 weeks, including the installation, deinstallation and opening days.
Exhibition time is applied for via an electronic form. With one application, you can apply for either the Gallery, Studio, or both (the entire space). The application must be directed to one of the forementioned spaces.
The electronic form must include, as a single PDF file, the exhibition application (max. 10 pages), which should contain the following sections:
- Concise exhibition plan 1 page (A4), presenting the exhibition idea and practical implementation
- Images (max. 10) supporting the overall exhibition concept. This might include images from previous works or other images (sketches)
- Condensed curriculum vitae
The exhibition concept and elaboration of content are essential parts of the application. The application text should clarify the proposed exhibition’s relationship to photographic art or the extended field of photography, especially when it is not obvious.
Please, also mention in your application if you already know or have planned that the proposed exhibition will be presented elsewhere in the Helsinki metropolitan area. We hope to include in our exhibition program works that have not been previously shown in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
Once selected, the artist agrees not to hold a solo exhibition with the same content in the Helsinki metropolitan area during the 12 months preceding the exhibition and throughout its duration.
Processing of applications
Applications are processed by the exhibition committee of 3-5 members, composed of members of the Association of Photographic Artists and who are named by the board of the association. In addition, two visiting assessors are always invited to participate in the evaluation of applications: a rotating member and an expert outside of the association. The exhibition applications are peer reviewed. All applicants are informed personally of the committee’s decision via email by Midsummer.
