The Association of Photographic Artists (VTL) turns 30 with a current total of 412 members! The organisation, since its formation in 1988, would have meant nothing without its rigorous community, or without the determined activities of Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, already established in 1978. In the early years, the function of the association was to stabilise the position of photography as an equal form of visual arts in Finland. Today the association, and its exhibition space Hippolyte, are known for their extensive and diverse presentations of all forms of photographic art and remain essential actors in the wider field of contemporary art. This year’s celebratory exhibition at Hippolyte Studio transforms the gallery into a “summer living room”. Displayed are recent works by member artists together with their photographic books—engendering both an immersive and slowed down experience.
The members of the Association of Photographic Artists were called to propose images, for a celebratory book and the current exhibition. The book will be published in the autumn of 2018 in collaboration with Musta Taide, a division of Maahenki publishing. The artists were requested to nominate recent photographic works produced within the last five years. Altogether, the book received proposals from 143 artists, totalling 522 individual pieces. Selection of the works will be in the publication. However, all entries can now be seen as a video presentation at Hippolyte Studio!
