ReCOLLAGES is a series of screen shots featuring open internet windows online arranged after some famous modern and postmodern collages and photomontages by such artists as Karel Teige, Herbert Bayer, Kurt Schwitters and Jiří Kolář.
The work explores both the diversity of sources found on the Internet and the dematerialization of image in the digital era. Boundaries between photography, painting and drawing become blurred and finally irrelevant. The work also reconsiders the validity of boundaries distinguishing amateur, art and professional productions and correlates with an increasingly easy access to pictures with the increase of legal restrictions of use, Laurene Bois-Mariage explains.
Collage, a term derivated from the French coller meaning glue, is a technique consisting of an assemblage of separate elements and different forms of all kinds, thus creating a new whole. It is also a major form of appropriation that Laurene Bois-Mariage’s exhibition proposes to replay with digital media.
Laurene Bois-Mariage lives and works in Helsinki. She first received art education in Fine Arts and later graduated as Master of Arts from Ecole Nationale Superieure de la Photographie in Arles, France in 2005. Laurene Bois-Mariage is particularly interested in collective practices of photography, in its new contexts of production and diffusion, as well as in its place within social media. She regularly present group and solo exhibitions and participates in various cultural events internationally. In 2015 her works have been seen in Finland, Estonia, Greece, Spain and the US.
